First day of clinic

July 22, 2013

Away from Home

The day began loading the buses with the necessary supplies for the two clinics we were servicing. It was incredible day. I worked in the pharmacy. For 8 hours I was on my feet filling prescriptions. The time just flew by. It was amazing to see the people of the community that we served. The were incredibly poor. They were very thankful for us being there. These people have absolutely nothing. One of the student volunteers was talking with a patient and commented that she thought her earrings were pretty. The patient took off her earrings and tried to give them to her. It was very touching.

After dinner we had a time for reflection. We were asked to share our intention for the week. I was the first one to speak. I shared how committing to this experience was definitely out of my box. I mean I am more of a Four Seasons gal. While sharing my emotions got the best of me and I started crying. Being a part of this brigade has definitely put things in perspective. Another really cool part of this trip has been seeing all the young people, most of whom have never met each other, connect. Just after 2 days being together you would never know they all just met. It has been wonderful spending this time with Maddie and seeing her in a different light.
